THE MOST VISITED MILITARY TOUR IN UKRAINE

The Private Missile Base Tour might ruin your image of the Soviet army from the Bond movies. Probably, it will just make it real, as the base is still fully functioning – apart from the fact that the nuclear warheads were removed. ChernobylX gives you the one and only chance to push the GREY (not red like in the movies) button launching the missiles into the air. Be one of the few adventurers who not only experience the cold war atmosphere, but can (simulate) launch a nuclear rocket from a command room 40 meters underground.

You will see all the equipment and interiors that are used nowadays in the Russian army. You will also find answers to questions why the people working with missiles are only able to live 25 years, why were the missile silos covered in wax, and how the officers in the control room could survive 45 days after a nuclear attack. This tour is a great complement to your Chernobyl tour, especially the Duga Radar which was directly connected to the Missile troops of USSR.

You will leave Kyiv from your address based on your preference between 7 and 10 AM with your private driver, to arrive in Pervomaysk after a 3 hour drive on a highway, watching documentaries or simply reading. The 3 hour excursion around the missile base with our English guide makes you think, how close the world was to destroying itself: The Soviet prime minister was able to launch four of the most powerful rockets from the Moscow area with a push of one button. Automatically, missiles from all over the whole USSR would have been launched on pre-set targets. The missile base in Pervomaysk was part of this monstrous defence system.

After visiting the little military museum with your guide, you will go around all the premises – on the ground (can you believe the Soviet soldiers had their pig farm and garden here as well!) and underground – it will give you a rough but realistic look into the Missile troop’s life, even an image of a nuclear war and how they would survive it.

But before you have a call of duty – sending the 12 nuclear warheads from your base to your enemy. You will type in the code (coming every 7 seconds from Moscow as a part of training) and push the button. You will hear an alarm, this time it is for real. And you will have no idea about your targets, as this is top secret… the ones in your missile base did not fly to the USA.

At the end, you get out to see the world after the apocalypse. And here – in Pervomaysk – the surroundings will drop your jaw with dozens of military vehicles, tanks, and the largest trucks you may have ever seen – to transport the missiles. Not enough? Take a selfie with the deadliest nuclear rocket on this planet – SS-18 Satan. Decommissioned, almost empty. But it still causes the whole body to shiver when standing next to it.

Before you take off back to Kyiv, let’s have lunch (not included in the price) and send the SS-18 selfie to the world. You will arrive in Kyiv at your address between 5 and 8 PM. To sum it up: besides the wow moments of the artefacts and premises you will walk through, this tour will give you a complete knowledge on the Cold War and the nuclear threat, as well as the decommissioning and silo destruction processes. This is the favorite additional tour for Chernobyl visitors, and the most popular tour option for groups of friends especially in post-pandemic times.

Private Missile Base Tour Safety

Working in a missile base back in the Soviet times was an honor and a high risk – especially for those who worked with the rocket fuel. All places, rooms and trails we will take you to are clean and approved by our guide. The tour is designed the way that there is even a close to zero chance of injury, although the objects are all military. The tour is appropriate even for kids from 10 years old.

Due to actual constraints, road, missile base visits by official delegations, or weather conditions, ChernobylX keeps the right to change the program of the itinerary, informing you about any constraints.
